- 4th Year Project -
The Govan Brewhouse is designed as a destination brewery that combines varied public gathering areas and brewery production in the Govan area. The objective of this project is to reward the people of Govan with a sense of civic pride and a sense of ownership to their beer and kombucha production.

Visitors are greeted by the brewery's malt silo which appropriately represents the start of the brewing process. The silo as a symbol to indicate the entrance of the brewery.
From there visitors are introduced to varies stages of the brewing process in the brewery's shop. A kombucha kettle takes the role of a reception that greets visitors as well as the beginning of the kombucha manufacturing process. A dramatic full height curtain wall frames the fermentation cellar, previewing the final stages of the beer production.
Meet The Tour Guides
There are three forms of architectural methods employed as tour guides throughout the microbrewery. Pipework has the fundamental role of leading guests to the main space - the brewhouse. Sequence of arches are employed for indicating horizontal movement throughout the building. The roof structure takes the role of directing vertical circulation and suggests direction to the basement or to the top level.
Tour Guide One - The Pipes
The pipework has the role of guiding guests from the main entrance to the main space. Following the pipework the fermentation cellar in the shop and reception area, the pipes will take you through the Brewhouse and Beerhall, concluding at the basement level where the pipes meet the beer and kombucha kegs at the bar.
Tour Guide Two - The Arches
The pipework leads the path under a descending ceiling accompanied with the noises of malt grains falling on the metal shoot provides a visual and acoustic attraction to the Brewhouse. Guests are then able to transition into the heart of the brewery with elevated views above the manufacturing process below. Elevation of spaces have been carefully considered to not disturb the process. Guests continue to circulate the brewery by following the sequence of arches.
The arches provide the elevated sequence of movement from the Brewhouse and now into the Beerhall. This is where the pipework concludes its journey back and forth from the fermentation cellars (entrance) to the Beerhall (main space). Guests are able to enjoy the products alongside the Brewhouse. Separated by a curtain wall, the production of beer and kombucha is celebrated with the guests and the production tanks side by side.
Tour Guide Three - The Roof
The final tour guide that guests will come in contact with is the roof structure. The roof structure takes the role of providing vertical circulation when the steel trusses extend into the building where there is a staircase. The structure not only points to another level but it shapes the volume of movement.
Transparency
Throughout the building, strategic connections link people to one another around the brewery through the provision of structural sequence and suggestive movement. The concept of transparency and exposure has influenced all aspects of this design proposal.
